An interactive webinar about the first vertical forest in the North of Europe.

A unique project has been realized in Eindhoven, the Netherlands. The Trudo Tower is a 70 meter high residential tower with a vertical forest, designed by the Italian architect Stefano Boeri, who designed his first vertical forest in Milan in 2014.

The Vertical Forest in the Netherlands contains 250 mature trees and 5,200 plants and shrubs, good for about 8,000 kilos of CO2 absorption and 18,000 kilos of oxygen per year. Vertical forests are gaining more and more interest from Northern European cities. What are the key issues involved in their construction?

Many things have to be taken into account. Weather conditions, improvement of the living environment and safety. But it starts with the trees and plants. They have to get their necessary nutrition, oxygen and moisture from a very small place. They also have to develop the necessary strength so they do not fall over, causing serious problems at great height. The needs of the trees as well as safety and weather conditions require customized substrate with very specific qualities.

Martijn Verberne is senior gardener and project leader for Dutch gardening and landscaping organization DuPré, that was in charge of the construction and maintenance of the green in the residential tower. Martijn collaborated with Jarno van Veelen of BVB Landscaping on a design for the growing areas in the tower, and on trials with substrate, irrigation and fertilization.
